On the 6 of April 2009, at 1:32GMT, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck a place near L'Aquila, 120km northeast of Rome,Italy. The earthquake was caused by a movement of the NW-SE trending fault( a fracture in a rock caused by one side of a rock to move). Italy lies in an earthquake prone region where the extension of the back-arc basin in the Tyrrhenian Sea is opening faster than the African Plate is colliding into the Eurasian Plate.
This earthquake caused damage to 3000 to 11,000 homes in the city of L'Aquila displacing 65,000 people. Several buildings collapsed and 308 people were killed. Moreover, about 1,500 people were injured. Among the victims 20 were children.
Around 40,000 of those homeless refugees have found refuge in camps catering to the homeless. Another 10,000 of them were housed in hotels along the coast. Food and aid were also provided. These were some of the government efforts designed to render help to these people.
Poor building standards or poor construction materials seemed to have contributed to the large loss of lives. Therefore I, think that using better and stronger materials is something the government should look into in order to improve on so that when earthquakes occur in the future, the loss of lives and damage to property would not be so severe.
Aftershocks due to the earthquake could be felt.
